this is a little bit of brain vomit
I consider myself politically illiterate
There was time in my life when it was a large concern of mine. I stayed very much in tune with the political climate of the early Bush years and the
fiasco that was the 9/11 wars.
But now that I’m a philosophy student in an isolated college town living without a TV I find it hard to keep up. Although that is no excuse. In the
age of the internet it wouldn’t be hard for me to jump on youtube and learn all I wanted about politics. I guess at some point I stopped caring.
Every once and a while someone in class will bring up a current political example to make a point but that is generally the extent of my political
awareness.
Today however, I have been inspired. Perhaps just outraged.
I learned that the healthcare bill passed. This I could care almost very little about. While it seems we may have stumbled in our national drunken
stupor towards a socialist ideal we are not even headed in the right direction. That is if you want my opinion. But in any case I found out the
healthcare bill passed. At the time I was in my contemporary social and political philosophy class. Today was the first day after covering
libertarianism. My teacher tells us about this video of ‘Tea Baggers,’ who were throwing money at a man with Parkinson, saying to him “Let me decide
if I want to give you money.” Although I found the pejorative, ‘Tea Baggers’ amusing I didn’t think too much of it.
I guess my curiosity was spiked because I looked the video up.
I was shocked. I was offended. I was embarrassed.
There was a man telling a severely handicapped person that if he wants money he has to work for it.
That if he wants a hand out he’ll have to go to the other side of town.
Men using a disabled man as a political prop.
Anything to win.
And I have to think to myself ‘how far does this go?’ These people are so entrenched in their bunker of ideals they can’t see that there isn’t a war
outside. They are vicious warriors in a battle against compassion. They have eyes that see less then the blind.
This shit… doesn’t… fucking…matter.
Yet here I am, watching a video of a man yelling at a less fortunate man over a matter beyond either of their control. If only these people could
realize what the world has in store for them. Only the God of Nietzsche knows the complete injustices that are yet to come. And only Gaia knows how
soon it is before there will be no more food to feed our 7 billion mouths. These things must happen. They will be incalculably worse then socialized
health care. But these things must happen in order for us to be free.
But here people are screaming silence.
As the emotional response dims in my head, the philosopher stuck inside me says: I wish these people had studied Marx.
